Vedic astrology is also known as Jyotisha and means wise light or wisdom of the heavens. This astrological practice is a holistic approach to life, encouraging full development of the soul. The Light of Jyotisha is that of pure consciousness which shapes our perception. When perception is balanced, the ups and downs of life are much more easily navigated and understood. In addition, Vedic astrology serves as a guide for specific measures that are adopted for healing problem areas. Among these are Ayurvedic health and yoga practices as well as certain stones that are said to contain medicinal properties. Ayurveda, mantra and yoga are the Jyotish remedies one can expect to receive during a Vedic astrological reading. Referred to as upayas in Sanskrit, these physical and spiritual remedies serve as stabilizing influences through transitions or periods of growth and change.
Vedic astrology is a sidereal system while the western system is tropical. Tropical astrology is based on defining the constellations according to the seasons and where the sun rose against the first-millennium sky. For tropical astrologers, that the solstice points (tropics) have drifted from one constellation to another over the last millennia, due to the precession of the equinoxes is not calculated. The underlying philosophy remains unchanged in spite of precession, because it is based on the Earth’s relationship to the sun, not to the stars. The western system emphasis is on the symbolic or metaphorical meaning and differs from sidereal astrology, which focuses on the intrinsic meaning of stars, calculating horoscopes relative to a real-time, astronomical sky.
