This week our guest is Dr. Jay Cohen. Dr. Cohen is a nationally esteemed medical practitioner and researcher, author of eight health books and more than a hundred medical articles, and an expert on medication safety and nutrition. His newest book, Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs: New Tests, New Treatments, Better Options (2013), is the only book that takes readers step-by-step through the evaluation process, informing men of vital new tests and treatment options that can help tens of thousands of men avoid unneeded surgery or radiation.
In men with a high PSA number and enlarged prostate, the standard recommendation from urologists is to perform a “blind” prostate biopsy followed by a radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy if cancer cells are found, “just to be safe.” These crude tools from a 20th-century medical model are inaccurate, dangerous, and can have serious negative health consequences for men for life.
Dr. Cohen says there are new and better tests and more effective treatment technologies that patients don’t know about. Dr. Cohen was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011 and directed toward surgery or radiation, but after learning about leading-edge tests and conducting dozens of interviews with top doctors, he avoided invasive treatment and his prostate cancer remains under excellent control without drugs.
Dr. Cohen recommends 11 steps men should take before going under the knife or getting radiation, including:
— Why men should still get annual PSA testing–but what those numbers really mean
— New tests that can pinpoint the location of suspicious areas before the biopsy
— Smart questions to ask your urologist, surgeon, and radiologist
— How to choose between eight different treatment approaches based on your test results and risk factors
Be sure to tune in Wednesday to find out the latest on prostate cancer.
